Senasa: «En-route control contributes to food safety»

Lisandro Tabossi, coordinator of Food Safety and Quality at the Buenos Aires North Regional Center of Senasa, highlighted the role of inspection of food transport, live animals and plant material.

We seek above all things safeguard human health and ensure the safety of agricultural foods", said the coordinator, referring to the controls carried out by the Agency on the transport of food and products of plant and animal origin on the routes of north-central Buenos Aires.

The regional official added that these actions also seek to "penalize those transporters who do not comply with current health regulations and raise awareness among producers, marketers and the general public about the risks and consequences of consuming a product that does not comply with traceability, identification and labeling standards, essential characteristics to guarantee the suitability of any food."

Controls in numbers

Between January and April 2018, Senasa carried out 70 roadside controls, verifying 1.709 transports of food substances, live animals, fresh citrus fruit and nursery propagation material at different strategic circulation points in north-central Buenos Aires.

As a result of these controls, during the mentioned period the Buenos Aires Norte Regional Center of Senasa has seized 37 kilograms of meat (including chicken breast, beef and sausages) and 68 kilograms of cheese, which were transported in violation of current health regulations.

Common irregularities

The most common irregularities detected by Senasa agents range from the lack of transport authorization, to false authorizations and lack of legends and inscriptions on the sides of the vehicle. The transported products are also controlled, both the appearance that produces the sensorial or organoleptic impression as well as the health documentation.

The operations are carried out by specialized personnel from the different health areas of the Buenos Aires Norte Regional Center of Senasa and have the support of the police of each municipality where the procedures are carried out.
