According to Unctad, 66% of countries protect people's data and privacy

66% of countries effectively protect people's data and privacy, despite the increase in the adoption of protection laws, according to a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), released on Wednesday (29.04.2020) within the framework of the e-commerce week.

«Only 66% of the world's nations safeguard people's data and privacy, “despite an 11 percentage point increase in the adoption of data protection and privacy legislation in the period 2015-2020,” UNCTAD said in a statement.

They stressed that the "significant gaps in the adoption of the cyber law leave the vulnerable consumers during the coronavirus crisis as they access goods and services online.”

The results of a new survey on global adoption of cyber law show that the proportion of countries protecting citizens from misuse of their data is "even lower among the least developed countries, with only 43%«.

“Given the rise in cybercrime, scams and online fraud during the Covid-19 pandemic, the survey results are very worrying,” said Shamika N. Sirimanne, director of UNCTAD’s technology and logistics division.

The survey shows that the evolving landscape of cybercrime and the resulting skills gaps are a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies and prosecutors, especially for cross-border enforcement.

Unctad recommends that when the Countries should opt for technology-neutral legislation if they adopt new cyber laws where possible, to avoid the need for periodic reviews and to ensure compatibility between different legal systems.

La Security is an essential value to support the development of electronic commerce, reason for the virtual meeting taking place this week.

“This is especially true in these challenging times, when digital tools are increasingly the only vehicle to access goods and services,” Sirimanne added.
