UK and US sign customs mutual assistance agreement

-

The UK signed a customs agreement with the US, ensuring that the trade between countries is not interrupted after the Brexit transition ends at the end of the month.

El Bilateral customs assistance agreement will allow customs authorities to continue to cooperate, including by exchanging data, to tackle customs fraud.

The document was signed by Treasury Secretary Jesse Norman and U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson.

"This is an important agreement that ensures continuity after leaving the EU and demonstrates the strength of the customs relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom," Norman said in a statement. release"This agreement will allow us to continue cooperating in the fight against customs infringements through the exchange of information and good practices, and provides legal backing for schemes to facilitate trade flows for importers and exporters."

It will also provide the Legal basis for the Mutual Recognition Agreement for Authorized Economic Operators, which will ensure that people and businesses continue to benefit across their respective borders.

The Authorised Economic Operator scheme is an internationally recognised quality mark that allows a company to obtain customs benefits at the border, recognising that its role in the international supply chain is secure and that it complies with international standards on customs control procedures.

The deal comes a day after International Trade Secretary Liz Truss announced a agreement with Mexico which will see the two countries continue trading on the same terms as in the EU-Mexico trade agreement.
