-

Peru has closed its borders to plant products from Bolivia, such as soybeans and their derivatives, chia seeds and peanuts, the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), the Peruvian entity in charge of this sector, announced on Tuesday (21.01.2020).

According to this official body, the measure is based on a review of the import requirements signed with Bolivia and is applied with the purpose of safeguard phytosanitary conditions in Peru.

The Peruvian measure was adopted shortly after the National Service for Agricultural Health and Food Safety (Senag-Bolivia) suspended import permits for Peruvian vegetables.

Senasa said that this provision, which affects Peruvian producers of vegetables in the border area, such as potatoes, carrots and onions, caused unrest in Peru.

Peruvian authorities indicated that Peru complies with the phytosanitary requirements demanded by Senasag of Bolivia for the export of Peruvian products.

Peru and Bolivia are traditional trading partners and in this framework, the Peruvian market imports around 600 thousand metric tons of soybean meal, some 23 thousand tons of sunflower meal and 47 thousand tons of soybean flour from Bolivia.

The two countries, which have a common history, are also full members of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) along with Ecuador and Colombia, whose community market represents 6,9 percent of Peruvian trade.
