Peru files dispute with Brazil over plastics taxes at WTO

-

Peru presented to the World Trade Organization (WTO) a complaint about the taxes and tax treatment that Brazil has imposed on imports of plastics made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), reported this Thursday (16.07.2020) the Geneva-based organization in a release.

The Peruvian side maintains that the anti-dumping measures imposed by Brazil on products such as PET sheets, and the application of the tax on industrial products (IPI), violate regulations established in 1994 by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT, predecessor of the WTO).

The presentation of The dispute forces Peru and Brazil to negotiate a solution within 60 days, and if this period is not met, the WTO will create a special group. to investigate the dispute and make a decision regarding it.

The final authority to rule should the WTO take part in the dispute would be the Appellate Body, the body's final authority, but it is paralysed by the US refusal to approve the appointment of new judges to its ranks.
