Paraguayan Foreign Minister Antonio Rivas Palacios announced on Monday (02.12.2019) that the country will assume the Pro Tempore Presidency of Mercosur this week from Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

For this purpose, the Paraguayan President, Mario Abdo Benítez, will travel to the city of Bento Goncalves, state of Rio Grande do Sul, to participate in the Mercosur Presidents' Summit scheduled for Thursday, December 5.

The regional meeting was launched on Monday with the preparatory meeting of the Common Market Group (GMC) and the extraordinary meeting of the Mercosur Trade Commission (CCM), where technical aspects of an economic/commercial, institutional and external relations nature were discussed, the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry reported.

Rivas Palacios told the media that during the pro tempore presidency, Paraguay will continue with regional integration issues as set out in the agenda and as developed by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

He assured that the Paraguayan president will continue working to consolidate Mercosur's strategic alliances with other countries and blocs.

On the other hand, he commented that During the Mercosur Summit taking place from December 2 to 5, they hope to finalize a new Automotive Agreement with Brazil, which will guarantee the development of Paraguayan maquiladora industries.

In this regard, he explained that this is a broad agreement that will allow the auto assembly industries based in Paraguay to continue exporting auto parts to Brazil, in accordance with current legislation.

He said that the main objective is for Paraguay to continue being the main supplier of auto parts for large Brazilian factories, given that maquiladora companies are very important for the country's economic development.

Within the framework of the 2020th Summit of Heads of State of Mercosur and Associated States, Paraguay will assume the Pro Tempore Presidency of the regional bloc, which it will hold until July XNUMX, the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry said.
