The Director General of the National Customs Authority of Panama, Leo A. González and his counterparts from Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala, successfully signed the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) on the Customs Program Authorized Economic Operator as part of the agenda of the Second Central American Customs Round of the first half of 2019 held in Guatemala City, the statement said.
100 companies, OAS
This agreement, which includes the integration of more than 100 Authorized Economic Operators (AEO), of which 25 are Panamanian companies, is of vital importance in facilitating trade exchange between countries in the region, as it provides support in strengthening national competitiveness, promotes voluntary customs and tax compliance, supporting legitimate trade with recognition of good taxpayers.
OAS, public-private partnership
The OEA Program, which is based on the concept of a public-private partnership, offers great benefits to companies that are certified, since it reduces the percentages of cargo verification, speeds up the dispatch of goods and gives priority to the mobility of cargo in land transport, which translates into a reduction in times and costs at border crossings.
This program implements the Central American trade facilitation strategy, ensuring that customs services contribute to the region's competitiveness.
Panama, pioneer
During the event, the Director General of Customs of Panama, Leo A. González, received a distinction from the Chamber of Commerce of Guatemala, in recognition of their work, leadership and efforts to achieve the signing of this important international agreement, the official text states.
Panama is one of the pioneer countries in the implementation of the OAS Program, which has brought tangible benefits to companies in the logistics and foreign trade sectors.
