Panama seeks technological interconnection of customs management mechanisms

In compliance with the government strategy established by the President of the Republic of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, the General Director of Customs, Tayra I. Barsallo, held a meeting with the General Manager of the Colon Free Zone, Giovanni Ferrari, with the objective of establishing work teams and schedules for the interconnection of technological systems.

During this first approach, both the customs director and the manager of the country's main free zone agreed to work quickly in order to Develop and implement the technological advances required to interconnect the Customs Management Integration System (SIGA) and the Commercial Movement Declaration (DMC) for a better exchange of information in a timely manner. and provide users of both entities with the tools and technical resources to facilitate trade and more efficient control against smuggling, trademark fraud and drug trafficking.

“These advances are very necessary to get off the FATF grey lists and to improve our position as the logistics hub of the Americas”, explained Director Barsallo, emphasizing the need to strengthen customs controls in the Colon Free Zone and Paso Canoas, as well as in ports and airports, mainly in Terminal 2 of Tocumen, where a greater number of customs officials will be required.

"There are so many opportunities for improvement," said manager Ferrari, who was positive about the plans and strategies that the Free Zone has planned to attract new buyers and to combat massive smuggling, drug trafficking and counterfeiting of products.

Both officials also agreed to review issues related to electronic commerce, customs procedures and to create a complaints line, with the aim of achieving greater participation from users and the general public.
