The World Trade Organization (WTO) announced that, in consideration of the uncertainty and health concerns over COVID-19, it decided to cancel this year's Public Forum which was scheduled to take place from September 29 to October 2.
The Geneva Public Forum was expected to attract over 500 people.
"The decision was taken in view of the difficulties that would arise from organising a public event at the WTO premises, with the participation of thousands of people from all over the world, as well as the practical problems of planning international travel in September," he said.
The theme of the Public Forum was to build on the WTO's 25 years of experience. Under the main theme, the following sub-themes were planned to be addressed: The WTO: past, present and future; Innovation in the digital age; and Collective action for sustainable trade, he explained.
However, the Secretariat of The WTO is considering the possibility of organizing a smaller event, probably online., before the end of the year, in order to be able to exhibit part of these works, he announced.
"We apologize to all the people and organizations that were preparing to participate in the Public Forum," he said.
