WTO suspends activities due to coronavirus

The World Trade Organization (WTO) on Monday (15.03.2020) joined the labor restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which now has Europe as its epicenter.

Roberto Azevedo, the director general of the organization, reported this Sunday that starting next Monday, access to the offices of the organization's headquarters will be restricted.

They also remained All scheduled meetings suspended with effect until the end of April, while staff will work from home at least until the end of March, except for those who are deemed strictly necessary to show up, it said in a press release.

He said that at the end of March, the measures will be evaluated to make the necessary adjustments, and added that the way to hold virtual work meetings is being analyzed.

The Swiss-based WTO has joined the government restrictions ordered last Friday in Switzerland, which include the closure of schools and tighter controls at its borders, particularly with Italy, the most affected region in Europe.

Restaurants, bars and nightclubs were also restricted to a maximum of 50 people, and social contacts were generally requested to be reduced in order to limit the spread of the new strain of coronavirus.
