The Secretary-General of the World Customs Organization, Kunio Mikuriya, participated on Tuesday (10.08.2021) in the Congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast (Africa).
Speaking virtually at a panel discussion on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and proposed solutions for a sustainable future, Mikuriya explained the efforts of the WCO, in cooperation with the UPU, to ensure the flexibility and adaptability of the postal supply chain, in particular to meet the challenges arising from the exponential growth of e-commerce.
The Secretary-General stressed the importance of exchanging advance electronic data to enable Customs to minimise risks in an automated, rapid and effective manner and thus facilitate the flow of legitimate packages.
Likewise, called for greater cooperation between Aduanas and Post Offices for Support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and consumers, as well as protecting the health, safety and care of citizens.
On this occasion, the highest authority of Customs invited the UPU to contribute to the review cycle of the WCO e-commerce package.
The theme of the 2021 Universal Postal Union Congress is “COVID-19 and the postal sector: what has changed, what hasn’t, and what needs to change.” The meeting of the Universal Postal Union, the second oldest institution in the United Nations system, brings together officials in charge of the postal sector, authorities from regulatory bodies and intergovernmental agencies, plus high-level representatives from other organizations.
