WCO develops training in Panama aimed at curbing the trade in counterfeit goods

The World Customs Organization (WCO) started on Wednesday (01.06.2022) in Panama a workshop called “Seascape 2” with the aim of quantifying the scope of the counterfeiting and piracy more effectively, the host country's National Customs Administration reported.

The initiative, which will run until June 3, is part of the efforts that the WCO is carrying out for the Strengthening the human resources of customs, taking into account that eThe exchange of information between customs entities It is vital to protect intellectual property rights and perform more effective risk analysis work.

According to the statement, technicians from several countries in the Americas region are participating in the event: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, United States, Panama and representatives of exclusive international brands discuss methods for distinguishing between a genuine and a counterfeit item, as well as operational criteria for analyzing the use of multiple means of transportation for these crimes.  

The statement closed Director General of Customs of Panama, Tayra Barsallo who reported that the entity maintains a permanent fight: “Only in the year 2020 – period of the Covid-19 pandemic – retentions were made of allegedly counterfeit merchandise for a CIF value (cost, insurance and freight) of B/ 6,081,906.23, which represents great contributions in the fight against counterfeiting.”
