Within the framework of an agreement between the National Government and the Government of Chile, the Ministry of Transport of the Nation worked through the National Road Authority in conjunction with different organizations from both countries to enable the Pehuenche heavy load pass. Thus, RN 145 becomes a true bioceanic corridor through which not only the production of both countries can be exchanged, but also other Pacific ports can be reached for export via an alternative route to other ports.
“This new step is a great step forward for logistics and trade between Argentina and Chile. We have carried out important works and worked alongside our neighbouring country to create this new crossing for trucks, which will shorten distances, alleviate traffic at Paso Cristo Redentor and, above all, lower logistical costs, which are essential for the country's growth." Guillermo Dietrich, Minister of Transport of the Nation.
Type of cargo
Heavy cargo transport includes the loading of sealed units, that is, those that are cleared at the origin and the cargo is not opened until it reaches the destination, dangerous cargo (mainly gas and oil) and ballast (empty). This marks a historic event in the South of Mendoza, opening ties for the economic-commercial development of the regions, in addition to the intense tourist activity.
“Thanks to a joint effort between the two countries, which worked on both sides to make the Pehuenche Pass passable for all types of vehicles, the commercial ties between Argentina and Chile are firmly established. It is a step forward not only in communications but also a perspective of economic development for the entire region.” Patricia Gutiérrez, general administrator of the National Highway Administration.
In conjunction with the National Road Authority and the Provincial Road Authority of Mendoza, a platform was built at km 36 of RN 145, so that trucks could collect and the Gendarmerie could carry out controls from there so that traffic would flow smoothly. In addition, in this first phase of works to condition the Paso, the national agency was responsible for cleaning the site, channeling the water, horizontal and vertical signage and delineators.
In 2017, the National Government completed the total paving of the Pehuenche International Pass, turning it into a fully paved corridor. With these works, the Pass is positioned as a concrete alternative to the Cristo Redentor Pass for crossing into Chile, allowing a saving of hundreds of km south of Mendoza.
