The works at the border crossing in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, will be completed in the second half of 2020, with an investment of more than 7,5 million dollars, the largest in the 40 years of operation of the General José de San Martín bridge, to speed up the transit of people and trucks. “It is a significant advance for the entire country,” said the national director of Customs, Enrique Canon.
This initiative will update all physical spaces at the border crossing between the Uruguayan city of Fray Bentos and the Argentine city of Gualeguaychú. These works will be completed in the second half of 2020, Canon said. According to the director, this work will be the largest investment in 40 years of the General José de San Martín international bridge, inaugurated on September 16, 1976.

The first stage, completed in May 2019, includes the treatment plant, the cargo building (terminal and annexes), new roads, toilets and truck parking. The second phase, which will be completed between May and January 2020, will include work on the bus terminal, cargo building and central building, as well as work on warehouses and complete inter-network and underground electrical installations.
“The project began a long time ago; thanks to inter-institutional collaboration and the National Border Crossing Authority and funding from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, progress has been made, which is significant for the entire country,” Canon said. 350 trucks transit this crossing every day.
