The Mexican government filed a complaint against the United States with the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Thursday (10) for imposing tariffs of 25 and 7.6.2018 percent on imports of aluminum and steel, respectively.
In his complaint published by the WTOMexico is calling for consultations with the United States under the organization's dispute resolution system over additional tariffs on Mexican steel and aluminum ordered by Donald Trump.
In the document submitted to the WTO, it is stated that the US measure, under the argument of national security, contemplates the possibility of being "modified in the form of additional customs duties or quotas".
Among other arguments, Mexico claims that the United States applies its measures to products from developing countries whose share in imports does not exceed 3 percent.
He also maintains that the New rates violate the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of 1994 of the WTO because they grant less favorable treatment than that provided for in their list of concessions submitted to the organization and the customs duties exceed those set out in the US commitments.
Mexico believes that the national security argument given by the US "cannot be justified" under the GATT, since, "Among other things, it requires the United States to take into account economic well-being, as well as other factors that are not necessary for the protection of its essential security interests.".
