Mercosur: Uruguay assumes the presidency with China on the agenda

-

Uruguay will assume the pro tempore presidency of Mercosur next Monday, and one of its main objectives is to seek rapprochement with China.

A new Mercosur summit will take place next Monday (18.6.2018), in which Uruguay will assume the presidency of the regional bloc. "Uruguay will assume the temporary presidency of Mercosur, with rapprochement with China among its main objectives," said Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa, according to the official statement.

New Embassy in Argentina

Nin added that, after that meeting, the president Tabare Vazquez will travel to Buenos Aires to inaugurate a new building for the Uruguayan embassy in Argentina.

"Next Sunday there will be a meeting of foreign ministers and economic ministers of Mercosur and on Monday there will be a meeting of presidents," said Nin Novoa, in statements to the press made on Tuesday 12, after signing an agreement between Uruguay and the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Foreign Ministry. He added that, at the summit in Asunción, Paraguay will hand over the temporary six-month presidency to Uruguay.

Agreed agenda

Regarding the negotiations in search of a trade agreement with the European Union, he said that "difficulties have arisen that were not on the agenda." "We cannot imagine that, due to minimal details of geographical indications in product names, an agreement of this nature could be lost," he stressed.

He stated that "Uruguay will assume the temporary presidency and has its agenda already agreed with the rest of the countries to bring the bloc closer to China".

He added that "there is a lot of work being done, which has made substantial progress in Uruguay's rapprochement with the Asian giant." He recalled that this year marks 30 years of relations between the two countries and announced that he will visit that nation in August and November of this year together with the Vice President of the Republic, Lucía Topolansky.

"Work is also underway to reach an agreement for Uruguay's incorporation into the Chinese One Belt, One Road project, in which the country can play a very important role from the point of view of a logistics hub."

Nin Novoa added that the approach to the Canada, Singapore and other areas"There is a belief in some sectors of the population that these are just trade agreements, but they go further and include aspects of cooperation and policies," he said.
