Mercosur: Paraguay assumed the pro tempore presidency

Paraguay received the pro tempore presidency of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) from Brazil on Thursday (05.12.2019). On the occasion, its president Jair Bolsonaro expressed his support for his colleague Mario Abdo Benítez and stressed that his leadership will be of utmost importance to strengthen the regional bloc.

This Thursday, the 55th summit of heads of state and government of the bloc will take place in the southern city of Bento Gonçalves, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

During his farewell speech, Jair Bolsonaro stressed that his government has made progress in structural reform to transform Brazil and regain credibility in the world.

He also said that the The renewal of Mercosur is one of the central points of his administration. In this regard, he stressed the historic agreement reached with the European Union, emphasizing that it should be implemented as soon as possible.

In that order he said that Trade openness is a development tool and therefore insisted on the need to reduce or review export tariffs.We cannot waste time; we need to raise the reforms that are giving vitality to Mercosur, without giving rise to ideological setbacks”He stressed.

He also advocated for the advancement of a more fair and efficient Mercosur. In this regard, he argued that The defense of democracy is an essential pillar for the bloc, for this reason he said he reiterated that the commitment to freedom must remain stronger than ever to guarantee the well-being of citizens.

Bolsonaro concluded his speech by expressing his support for President Mario Abdo Benítez and highlighting that his leadership will be of extreme value to the bloc in these times of so many regional challenges.

Paraguay, through Mario Abdo Benítez, will hold the pro tempore presidency of Mercosur for six months in 2020, after which it will hand over to Uruguay.
