The MERCOSUR States Parties signed important instruments within the framework of the 55th Summit of Presidents that took place this Thursday (05.12.2019) in Bento Goncalves, Rio Grande do Sul, concluding a successful semester under the Pro Tempore Presidency of Brazil.

Among the signed documents, the following stand out: MERCOSUR Trade Facilitation Agreement, the Agreement for the Mutual Protection of Geographical Indications in the Territory of the States Parties, the Agreement on Linked Border Localities, the Police Cooperation Agreement applicable to border areas for linked border cities and the Agreement on Mutual Recognition of digital signature certificates.

The decision approving the Action Plan for the development and convergence of Digital Platforms for the resolution of consumer conflicts in the Member States of MERCOSUR was also approved, with which consumers will have, in the medium term, digital platforms to resolve consumer conflicts.

Likewise, the foreign ministers approved several decisions of the Common Market Council, referring to the Amendment of the Montevideo Protocol on Trade in Services of MERCOSUR, the Agreement for the Facilitation of the Transport of Dangerous Goods in MERCOSUR, the General Framework for Trade Facilitating Initiatives of MERCOSUR, the Fight against Corruption, mechanisms for evaluating forum productivity and monitoring work programs.

They also approved the update of the Institutional Structure of MERCOSUR, the regulations of Article 20 of the Treaty of Asunción, the MERCOSUR Training Platform, the MERCOSUR Baggage Regime, as well as the Budgets for the MERCOSUR Structural Convergence Fund (FOCEM) and the MERCOSUR Parliament for the 2020 fiscal year.

In addition, the MERCOSUR – FONPLATA Trusteeship Agreement was signed, which will allow for the financial management of the MERCOSUR Structural Convergence Fund (FOCEM).

Paraguay assumed the Pro Tempore Presidency of the bloc, which will run until July 2020. During PPTP 2020, the country will seek to give a new focus to integration and will promote actions aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens in the region. In this sense, Paraguay's priorities will be aimed at achieving tangible results in areas that have a direct impact on people's daily lives.
