Argentine and Uruguayan legislators toured Martin Garcia Island

-

Argentine and Uruguayan legislators shared a new visit to Martín García Island on Thursday (25.4.2019) in order to hold an interparliamentary meeting at the headquarters of the Río de la Plata Administrative Commission (CARP), the binational body that defines the dialogue, the legal framework and the common actions between the Argentine Republic and the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, for the negotiation of matters of common interest in the Río de la Plata.

Parliamentarians from both sides toured the island with CARP authorities and then discussed bilateral cooperation issues, especially the latest progress in the dredging and maintenance work on the Río de la Plata Channels., long-delayed works that received a boost in 2017. In addition, there was talk about the hydrographic studies necessary to define the first land boundary between Argentina and Uruguay on the islands of the Río de la Plata.

During the meeting, the legislators highlighted the spirit of great cooperation that currently exists between both nations and recalled that on February 22, the first stage of the dredging project of the Martín García Channel was completed, which facilitates the navigation of overseas vessels in the section that goes from the Paraná River, passing through the Río de la Plata, towards the Atlantic Ocean.

These works were the result of an international tender carried out by the two countries within the CARP, which constituted a historic event in the shared management of this waterway.

Logistics efficiency

The Río de la Plata region receives a large part of the exportable agricultural production of Argentina and Uruguay, so improvements in logistics efficiency also imply higher incomes for producers in both countries.

The Argentine delegation was attended by Senator Marta Varela and Deputy Alejandro Grandinetti, and the Argentine Foreign Ministry was represented by the Undersecretaries of Institutional Relations and Public Diplomacy, Tomás Kroyer; of American Affairs, Leopoldo Sahores; the Director of South America, Federico Gonzalez Perini; and the Coordinator of the Binational Commission of the Cuenca del Plata, Mariano Vergara.

Both delegations agreed on the need to continue interparliamentary dialogue and to continue working together on issues of common interest regarding waterways.
