President Mauricio Macri gave a speech on Tuesday (24.09.2019) before the United Nations General Assembly, in which he addressed various issues related to the country's foreign and trade policy.
Below are the highlights of the speech:
1. Insertion into the world
"Since I took office in 2015, we decided to leave behind a period of confrontation with the world. In the midst of a complex world, we decided to take on the responsibility of making a contribution to multilateralism and the search for consensus."
2. Regional integration
“We are working to integrate more among ourselves and to integrate together with the world, as seen in the dialogue and cooperation between the countries of Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance.”
"I aspire to a modern Mersocur that is open to the world and adapted to the 21st century."
«Mercosur and the European Union reached «an unprecedented agreement».
3. Corruption
“In recent years we have managed to increase the amount of drugs seized, dismantle criminal drug trafficking networks, increase the capture of national and international fugitives, and also reduce homicides linked to drug trafficking throughout the country.”
“We continue to seek consensus to design a complementary judicial body at the regional level to fight organized crime together.”
4. Terrorism

5. Multilateralism
“Our responsibility to multilateralism has gone further. We have strengthened our positive role in strengthening global peace and security.”
6. Falklands
Argentina "reaffirms the legitimate and imprescriptible rights of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands and surrounding maritime spaces."
7. Climate change
"We are aware of the climate emergency and we must act in accordance with the commitments of the Paris Agreement," said the Argentine president at the UN.
He also said that more ambitious goals and efforts should be made "in terms of cleaner energy, particularly renewable energy, energy efficiency, forest care and carbon capture in soils."
