Argentine olive oil exports grew by 193%

Argentina ranks fifth as a world exporter after the European Union, Tunisia, Syria and Türkiye; it is the main producer in America.  

Argentine shipments of olive oil abroad increased by 193% between January and October of this year, compared to the same period in 2016, with 33,9 thousand tons sold, equivalent to USD 137,7 million, according to data collected by the Ministry of Agroindustry of the Nation.

Amongst the The main destinations are the United States, Spain and Brazil. 41,5% of the total volume sold this year was destined for the United States, with an annual increase of 220% in the total volume of shipments.

This performance is supported by the national agro-industrial portfolio due to the importance it represents in terms of generating employment and income at a regional level, both in the primary stages and in the industry. It also improves competitiveness and territorial and strategic development, which allow taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the international market.

Argentina is the main producer of olive oil in America and stands out for its favorable agroclimatic conditions, its production out of season compared to the Northern Hemisphere, as well as for having added cultivation and processing technologies that have allowed it to improve quality in accordance with the requirements of global demand.

In this context, National production is mainly carried out in Catamarca, which occupies first place in terms of hectares planted with olive groves in the country and concentrates 27% of the total, followed by La Rioja, with 26%, San Juan with 24,6% and Mendoza 16,8%.

As for the international market, the International Olive Council (IOC), which Argentina will chair in 2018, estimated in September 2017 that for the 2017/18 campaign, world production would reach 2.854.000 tons, 12% more than the previous campaign. World consumption is also expected to increase by 5%, reaching 2.889.000 tons.

In Argentina, the IOC projected production of 37.500 tons, 74% more than in the previous campaign.
