Customs seized hooks and sea items imported illegally

Specialized agents from the General Directorate of Customs dismantled a smuggling attempt on an Argentine-flagged ship. The shipment involved fishing products of foreign origin that They did not have the necessary supporting documentation for import, for which reason the customs personnel seized the merchandise, valued at more than $7,5 million.

After contacting the Federal Court No. 1 of Bahía Blanca, inspectors from the General Directorate of Customs proceeded to evaluate the origin and documentation of the products. However, the captain of the ship was unable to produce the documentation that would support the legal possession and importation of the merchandise of Austrian, Spanish and South Korean origin.

The customs agents confirmed that these were various fishing products, among which there were 34 hooks for squid fishing and 56 lamps for squid fishing vessels —that is, dedicated to squid fishing.

It was in this context that, under the terms of articles 123, 126 and 127 of the Customs Code, the agency's personnel seized the merchandise valued at $7.735.000. Also, according to article 876 of the same regulation, a minimum fine of $30.940.000 could be imposed.
