Chilean Customs donates blood bank to Arica Hospital

The National Customs Service of that country delivered a modern refrigeration system that increased the storage capacity of red blood cells in the northern region by 50% to the “Dr. Juan Noé Crevani” Hospital in Arica. The contribution responds to the powers of the regulatory entity and the donation was made effective by the National Director of Customs, José Ignacio Palma Sotomayor, according to the official statement.

The activity was attended by the acting mayor of Arica and Parinacota, Roberto Erpel Seguel; the regional minister of Finance, Pablo Arancibia; the acting director of the Arica Health Service, Cristian Quispe Arredondo; the director of the “Juan Noé Creavani” Hospital, Luis Vásquez Marty; the regional director of the Arica Customs Office, Osvaldo Osorio; and the acting deputy director of Healthcare Management of the Health Service, Claudia Valderrama.

The donated equipment is a stainless steel model, brand Thal Thalheimer of German origin. Its commercial value exceeds US$ 100 thousand dollars and its donation responds to an intense collaborative work between the Regional Directorate of Customs of Arica, the Health Service, the Hospital of Arica and the Ministry of Finance.

“This is possible thanks to the modernization processes that we promote from Customs and that allow us to make donations of certain goods that are in our possession to non-profit institutions,” explained the National Director, José Ignacio Palma, who highlighted the social commitment of his institution. “We are in charge of the supervision and facilitation of international trade, which implies a strong commitment to the protection of our community and this is another demonstration of this vocation of service and institutional values”, He said.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Hospital, Luis Vásquez, thanked Customs and the regional authorities for the important donation to the health center and explained that the refrigerator helps to increase security "previously there was only one and in case of failure it would be necessary to resort to other instances and on the other hand This new equipment allows us to increase storage capacity by 50% and have better management of blood elements. since everything that is used daily is contained in this refrigerator, obtaining a better use of resources.”

The Acting Mayor of Arica and Parinacota, Roberto Erpel, stated that “on behalf of our President Sebastián Piñera, I want to value the effort and work carried out by our regional authorities to make this important donation between Customs and the Arica Health Service a reality, which will safeguard this vital element that serves to safeguard many lives. This initiative reaffirms the work of the Government with a sense of unity and commitment to the country that the different institutions must have. Working collaboratively, we can overcome vulnerabilities and increase the efficiency of our services in meeting the needs of the people of Arica and Parinacota.”

The Director of the Health Service of Arica, Cristian Quispe, said that this is a historic day for the care of the users of the health facility and thanked the contribution on behalf of all the patients who will benefit from the joint work between different public services that made this donation effective. “There will be a refrigerator that will allow greater coverage of red blood cell storage, with state-of-the-art equipment,” adding that the contribution also covers the replacement of equipment that is reaching the end of its useful life.

Finally, the Seremi of Finance, Pablo Arancibia, indicated that it is a source of pride to be able to contribute to the health of the region “and as our President Sebastián Piñera calls for, we are working together for the well-being of the community.”
