Interpol warns of rising cybercrime

-

In these times of pandemic, Interpol launched a warning message to the citizens of the world: «Be alert, be skeptical and protect your computers".

Jürgen Stock, Secretary General of the International Criminal Police Organization, said that transnational crime is trying to take advantage of the current fear and has put the spotlight on the protective and medical material, something that no country escapes.

In an interview with EFE, he explained that criminals are taking advantage of the opportunities offered by this crisis and exploiting people's fears and concerns, such as problems in the supply of protective materials.

He said they are trying to sell counterfeit goods and the usual telephone scam has been modified: criminals pretend to be representatives of clinics or hospitals and tell stories of relatives who have fallen ill in order to ask for money for their medication.

«Criminals are moving from the physical environment to the digital world and cybercrime is currently a major focus of concern for law enforcement agencies.", Stock noted.

He added: “Protect your computer, make sure your system is up to date. Many of us are now spending more time at home working remotely.".
