G20 leaders and invited political leaders began a two-day summit in Osaka on Friday (28.06.2019) to discuss issues related to new global economic challenges and environmental commitments.
The discussions began with a first meeting on the digital economy, which will be followed by the first session of formal discussions by leaders gathered at a convention center in Osaka Bay.
Discussions will continue into Saturday afternoon, with the corridors filled with bilateral meetings between the leaders in attendance, including a key meeting between the leaders of the US, Donald Trump, and China, Xi Jinping.
During their interventions in the digital economy session, the differences came to light between the two countries in the areas of security and protection of intellectual property, following the veto imposed by Washington on the Chinese company Huawei.
The Beijing leader advocated for an "integrated approach to the real economy and the digital economy", as well as for "bridging digital divides, promoting sustainable development and the principle of balanced interests" for all countries and taking greater account of those in the development phase.
«As a global player in the digital economy, we are committed to fostering international cooperation and keeping our markets open."Xi said during the session, which took place right after the family photo taken by the G20 leaders before starting their meeting.
Trump, for his part, called the digital economy a "key driver" for growth, and stressed the need to ensure the "reliability and security of 5G telecommunications networks.", something essential for “freedom and shared prosperity.”
USA "will continue to oppose data, localizations and policies that have been used to restrict digital trade flows and violate intellectual property., the US president stressed, although without making any direct mention of the Huawei case.
