The Brazilian industry criticized the decision of the United States government to remove the country from the list of emerging countries and described it as "negative and illegal«.
The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) issued a statement on Tuesday (11.02.2020) following the decision of Donald Trump's government to reclassify several developing countries in investigations of trade defense measures.
For the CNI, it is a decision "made unilaterally, without taking into account the rules of the World Trade Organization" and considered that "It is one more act that reduces the importance of the multilateral trading system.» on the planet.
On Monday, the United States announced a change in the rules to consider a country as a developing country, something that affects Brazil and 20 other countries, which will lose benefits such as reduced import tariffs on products exported by developing countries.
The director of Industrial Development of the CNI, Carlos Abijaodi, said that Brazil needs a multilateral system with clear rules that are enforced. It is always a risk when trade disputes are resolved in isolation by a single country."It is essential for the Brazilian industry that the WTO remains strong and active," he said.
The CNI hopes that the decision of the United States will be punctual and specific to combat unfair subsidies and assured that it will be "attentive to the sequence of actions that may harm Brazilian exports" with this American "illegality."
The agency expressed fear that the decision would have a negative impact on national exports. "Currently, the steel, paper and cellulose sectors are already affected by US compensatory measures. With the new rules, the American government can increase the surcharge applied to the import of these products."
"Likewise, other Brazilian sectors could also be affected by the anti-subsidy measures announced by the United States. The CNI will be attentive to the consequences of these decisions," he concluded.
The decision of the US to reclassify developing countries, including Brazil, in investigations of trade defense measures, is negative and illegal, as it was done unilaterally, and does not follow the WTO rules. https://t.co/Q2jYPwOmpo pic.twitter.com/8KSb7SzpJO
