Argentine oil workers' strike hits agricultural exports

-

A union of oil workers in Argentina began a nationwide strike late on Wednesday (04.09.2019) to demand higher wages, which has complicated the milling and export of grain in the main agricultural province of the South American country.

The strike, carried out by the Federation of workers in the oilseed industrial complex, cotton ginners and related industries, will affect the south of the port area of Rosario., but not to the key area of San Lorenzo, where the workers are affiliated with another union.

«The strike by oil workers affects the export of grains and derived products», a union source told Reuters.

Nearly 80% of Argentina's agricultural products are shipped throughout the region.

«From the Federation of Workers of the Oilseed Industrial Complex (…) we inform (…) that a National Strike begins at 22 pm today (Wednesday) as the first step of a plan of struggle due to the lack of responses from the employers' associations (…) to the review of the Salary Parity., the union announced in a statement.

On the other hand, the Chamber of the Oil Industry of the Argentine Republic (CIARA) expressed its dissatisfaction with the union's decision to establish a national strike and with the arguments expressed by that federation.

«CIARA reiterated its commitment to dialogue and the protection of jobs and proposed that both parties return to the table after lifting the strike measures. the entity stated in a statement.

The chamber noted that the situation of the industry is critical and that the tax burden is not allowing it to achieve the necessary profitability given the strong primary nature of exports that has been deepening in recent months.
