Infrastructure financing, the future of work and the technology behind cryptocurrencies will be some of the topics that the world's top economic authorities will discuss at the first meeting of G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Presidents in 2018, to be held on March 19 and 20 at the Buenos Aires Convention and Exhibition Center (CEC).
The G20 Technical Unit stated on Friday (16.03.2018) that 22 Finance Ministers, 17 Central Bank Presidents and 10 heads of international organizations will participate in the meeting.
Among the topics to be addressed are the international financial architecture, the global tax system and financial regulations, topics that have been part of G20 debates for years.
Other topics, such as the future of work and infrastructure for development, arise from the priorities that Argentina set for this year in its capacity as president of the mechanism.
For the Argentine government, "new technologies are changing traditional work structures and the G20 has the opportunity to generate more inclusive growth if it manages to take advantage of these trends so that the benefits are multiplied."
The Argentine presidency has also said that "infrastructure increases productivity and makes long-term growth more sustainable. It also serves to generate physical and digital access to the opportunities of the new economy."
At the end of the meeting, which will be held behind closed doors, an official statement will be presented detailing the main points agreed upon and the topics to be discussed in future meetings.
This first ministerial meeting during the Argentine presidency is the first of a total of five meetings between finance ministers and central bank presidents during the year.
The G20 emerged in 1999 as a technical meeting of finance ministers and central bank presidents.
During the 2008 economic crisis, it became a space for discussion and decision-making in which the world's top leaders and major economies participated.
Together, its members account for 85 percent of global gross domestic product, two-thirds of the world's population and 75 percent of international trade.
