IMF congratulates Argentina for “stabilizing the economy”

-

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, congratulated the Minister of Finance, Nicolás Dujovne, and the president of the Central Bank, Guido Sandleris, for implementing policies aimed at balancing the accounts.

"I congratulated Minister Dujovne and President Sandleris for the decisive policy steps that have been taken and the progress made so far, which have helped to stabilize the economy," the head of the Fund said in a statement.

After meeting with two officials from Mauricio Macri's government at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Lagarde confirmed "the IMF's firm support for Argentina and the authorities' economic reform plan."

"The authorities' solid implementation of the stabilization plan and the continuity of policies have served Argentina well and will continue to be essential to improve the economy's resilience to external shocks, preserve macroeconomic stability, and foster medium-term growth," she concluded.

The Argentine government outlined its economic program with the IMF in monetary, fiscal and economic matters in exchange for a loan of 57.100 billion dollars.

In 2018, Argentina recorded a primary fiscal deficit (excluding debt interest) equivalent to 2,4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), three-tenths less than the amount agreed with the Fund, according to the Finance Minister on Friday (18.1.2019).
