EU advises on fight against organised crime

The president of the Council of the Judiciary of the Nation, Dr. Miguel Piedecasas, presented this Friday (23.02.2018) the Technical Assistance Program of the European Union PAcCTO (Assistance Program against Organized Crime) together with the experts of the European Union Ángeles García Medina and Arturo Merino Gutiérrez designated to technically assist Argentina in an EU program for Latin American countries.

This technical assistance programme of the European Union will be launched on April 11 and Argentina has been chosen to do so.

''The fundamental objective of this task is the fight against organised crime, addressing it from different aspects: police, judicial and penitentiary. The contribution of the European Union is at a technical level, and does not include financing or training during the years that the program lasts,'' explained Piedecasas.

This first meeting of experts with the leadership of the Council of the Judiciary of the Nation constitutes the first action of a task that will continue for 5 years.

''We intend to take advantage of this technical assistance to improve good practices in the justice service in matters of corruption, drug trafficking and human trafficking, which are the issues that this program addresses.'', said the head of the organization.

He added that ''From the Council we intend that this programme provides us with the tools to objectively measure the functioning of Justice in the EU and the different countries that comprise it and make it more efficient. in the fight against corruption, drug trafficking and organized crime in general.

During the activities that were carried out in the Argentine Republic, the experts began the first day with work meetings with the auditing body, were introduced to the councilors and held work meetings with the presidency of the Council.

On the second day they continued with the auditors and in the afternoon they participated in a seminar to share experiences with the anti-corruption experts of the Supreme Court of Justice, auditors of the CM. There were 42 participants.

There was also a meeting with judges convened by the Association of Magistrates and the Council of the Judiciary, and today they held a meeting with representatives of the judicial profession to explore their perspective on these issues.

"We will also have a meeting today with the CM's statistics officers and we will present the digital file's operating scheme," Piedecasas stressed, adding that "it is very important to have this technical assistance because we think it contributes to the legitimization of the strategies and also of the tools."
