Italy has closed its ports to two ships belonging to non-governmental organisations that rescue migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said.

On June 11, the Spanish government decided to allow the ship El Aquarius to enter the port of Valencia after Italy and Malta closed their port facilities.

On board the ship - belonging to the NGO Sos Méditerranée and Doctors Without Borders - there are 629 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean, in a vulnerable situation who left from Libya.
