On Thursday (21.12.2017) the environmental organization Greenpeace installed a five-meter-high Christmas tree made of plastic bags outside the Costanera Center shopping center in Santiago, Chile.
"We need to end one of the most silent and polluting evils of our environment because the 94% of Chileans use plastic bags and a total of 386.000 units are consumed annually, a figure that increases by 20% at Christmas," said the organization's spokesperson, Soledad Acuña.
Through this innovative proposal, activists of the organization invite people to get rid of plastic bags where they bring their Christmas purchases, hang them on the tree and become part of "The largest ecological Christmas tree in the country," according to the ANSA news agency.
El Friday (22.12.2013) the pine will light up with the thousands of bags that Greenpeace and people collected to send a message to the world: "No more plastic bags in all of Chile."
Have you seen our eco-friendly Christmas tree? It's made from hundreds of plastic bags that people leave for us to recycle. Bring your own, we're outside the Costanera Center#UnbundleYourself and let's ask together for the end of plastic bags throughout Chile! https://t.co/cP0CqXM3Vm pic.twitter.com/5kwU9DdjpZ
