The ministerial meeting of developing countries that are members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Monday (13.5.2019) called for strengthening this body to promote development and inclusion, in addition to commenting on the prevailing protectionist policies.
Ministers and senior officials from Egypt, Barbados, the Central African Republic, Nigeria, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, China, Benin, Chad, India, Indonesia, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Oman met for two days in New Delhi to explore ways of working together to strengthen the multilateral trading system. The meeting was also attended by WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo.
La final statement The meeting reaffirmed the primacy of the WTO as the global forum for establishing the rules of trade and governance, and expressed concern about the multiple challenges facing the multilateral trading system.
He also noted the importance of the WTO dispute settlement system for the multilateral trading system, stressing that it has proven to be more effective and reliable compared to its predecessor, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
