The Nexonum award from Spain recognized the Argentine $500 banknote with the image of the jaguar as the best in the world among those issued in 2016. This new award adds to the various international recognitions received by the family of banknotes Native Animals of Argentina put into circulation by the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA).
In a ceremony held in the auditorium of the Royal Mint, National Mint and Stamp Factory of Spain, an international jury made up of academics from thirty countries in Europe and America awarded the $500 bill first prize, the BCRA reported.
The contest, organized by The EL ECO Filatélico y Numismático magazine from Madrid awarded the best banknotes and coins in the world issued in 2016. At the same event, held last November, the Argentine $2 coin commemorating the Bicentennial of Independence achieved second place in the category of Best legal tender in the world.
In the last two years, The new family of banknotes featuring native animals has received several international awards. In addition to the Nexonum award,The $500 bill received the LatiNum Award for the best Latin American banknote in 2015/2016 and, in 2017, was chosen among the four best banknotes in the world with a shared second place, awarded by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS), which awarded the prize for artistic merit, design, use of color and security features. The $200 bill with the image of the southern right whale was awarded the 2016/2017 LatiNum Award for the best Latin American banknote.
The 2018 edition of the IBNS Best Banknote of the Year is also still pending, with the $1000 banknote being among the nominees.
The new family of banknotes seeks to highlight our natural resources and raise awareness about the preservation of our environment. It has the strictest security measures and a novel vertical design on its obverse. Currently, there are four denominations in circulation: $1000 (with the image of the ovenbird), $500 (jaguar), $200 (southern right whale) and $20 (guanaco).
