El value of trade de goods en 2020 will fall by 5.6 percent year-on-year in 2020, said this Wednesday (09.12.2020) the latest forecasts of the UN Conference for Trade and Development (Unctad), which however improve the perspectives mid-year, when the expected drop was 9 percent.

In 2019, the exported goods amounted to 18.9 trillion dollars, which would mean a drop this year to 17.8 trillion dollars, according to the statistics yearbook presented today by the United Nations agency.

The fall in merchandise trade projected by UNCTAD would be greater than that of the world economy, which the organization expects to be 4.3 percent, after global gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 2019 percent in 2.5, the smallest increase since the financial crisis of 2008-2009.

However, the The 5.6 percent drop in merchandise trade would be significantly lower than that recorded by UNCTAD in 2009, when the indicator plummeted by 22 percent.

The agency also foresees a sharper decline in services trade this year, up to 15.4 percent compared to 2019, which would be the biggest drop since measurements began in 1990.

This decline, significantly greater than that suffered in 2009 due to the financial crisis (9.5 percent), will be due to the negative impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused in sectors such as tourism and transport, UNCTAD analyzed.
