The General Directorate of Customs of El Salvador and the United States Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) signed this Monday (07.10.2024) a Mutual Assistance Agreement that seeks to strengthen border security and facilitate trade between both nations.
The agreement was signed by Benjamin Mayorga, Director General of Customs of El Salvador, and Troy Miller, Acting Commissioner of CBP. In his statement, Troy Miller He stressed the importance of this collaboration: “We value our relationship with El Salvador in pursuit of a common goal: safer borders and more efficient trade facilitation. This agreement expands our close cooperation in security and trade efforts.”
Once in force, the agreement will allow for the exchange of information and mutual assistance in cases of customs violations, thus strengthening collaboration between the two countries.
The statement from the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador highlights the firm commitment of the U.S. to El Salvador in various areas, including protecting borders against terrorism, combating drug trafficking, and disrupting the activities of transnational criminal organizations.
Jerson Posada, Minister of Finance of El Salvador, stressed that “these actions contribute to the simplification, automation and transparency of the processes of import, export and transit of goods. This provides important benefits to commercial operators, facilitating the dispatch of their operations and promoting compliance with foreign trade regulations.”
It is important to note that Mutual Assistance Agreements (CMAA) are bilateral agreements between the United States and its international partners, implemented by the respective customs administrations.
