Chilean President Sebastián Piñera announced on Thursday (13.06.2019) changes in a large part of his cabinet. From the Palacio de la Moneda, the president confirmed the dismissals of the current ministers of Energy, Health, Public Works, Social Development and Economy, as well as the head of the Foreign Ministry.
This is the second cabinet reshuffle of his second presidential term, which began in March 2018. Among the replacements, several of those chosen had been officials during Piñera's first administration (2010-2014), according to the Chilean press.
In Economics, The businessman José Ramón Valente will be replaced by the man who until then was Minister of Public Works, the economist Juan Andrés Fontaine.
In Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero He was removed from the cabinet despite having had a public display linked to the Chile trials at the International Court of Justice and to the regional meetings to analyze the situation in Venezuela. He was replaced by the lawyer and academic Teodoro Rivera, who served as Minister of Justice in the first Piñera Government (2010-2014).
In Social Development, the portfolio that was in charge of managing relations with the Mapuche people until the murder of community member Camilo Catrillanca last year, was taken over by lawyer Sebastián Sichel, and the position was left by engineer Alfredo Moreno, who was transferred to Public Works.
In Health, the doctor Jaime Mañalich was summoned again to lead the ministry, displacing Emilio Satelices.
In Energy Engineer Susana Jiménez left her post and Juan Carlos Jobet, with the same profession, took over.
The Cabinet changes come at a time when Chile's economic prospects are falling, and while approval of President Piñera is suffering, falling 12 points to 25%, according to the prestigious Center for Public Studies.
