E-commerce slowed down in the last quarter of 2019 in Chile, due to the social crisis, according to a report released this Wednesday (19.02.2020/XNUMX/XNUMX) by the National Chamber of Commerce (CNC).
«Online sales in the last quarter of 2019 slowed sharply, registering an increase of 16 percent, after having grown by 29,8 percent in the third quarter of the same year."the entity stated in the document.
According to the CNC, the protests that began on October 18 "had a strong impact on the country's economic performance."
E-commerce suffered from "problems with store closures that made deliveries impossible or delayed, the difficulty of operating at 100 percent, along with greater logistical difficulties affected the sector's results," the report explained.
On the other hand, "the consumer also restricted his consumption due to the national contingency."
The report showed that the The biggest blow was experienced by the tourism and entertainment sectors, down 5 percent from the fourth quarter of the previous year.
Meanwhile, trade and services registered growth below the historical average, with an annual increase of 18 percent in the period analyzed, compared to 37 percent in the last six years.
For the coming months, the CNC expects that online commerce will "resumes its pre-outbreak growth, along with the normalization of the sector's operations, which will continue to gain share in consumer purchases."
The Chamber stated in the document that during the second half of 2019, online transactions grew by 22,3 percent annually, below the first half (32,9 percent).
With this result, 2019 closed with a year-on-year increase of 27,2 percent.
