The US State Department announced on Thursday (24.01.2020) New visa rules to restrict the «birth tourism"That is, trips by foreigners who wish to obtain American citizenship for their children.
"This rule establishes that traveling to the United States for the principal purpose of obtaining U.S. citizenship for a child by having the child born in the United States is an inadmissible basis for issuing a nonimmigrant B visa," according to a Valid identity document from the White House.
"Accordingly, a consular officer must deny a B nonimmigrant visa to an alien whom he or she has reason to believe is traveling for this primary purpose," the document said.
"The final rule addresses concerns about the risk this activity poses to national security and law enforcement, including criminal activities associated with the birth tourism industry," the document added.
The New visa rules will come into effect from Friday 24 January 2020.
The B nonimmigrant visa is a classification for a person who wishes to enter the United States temporarily for business or tourism purposes.
According to the United States Constitution, all persons born in the United States are granted American citizenship.
