June 20: Flag Day

-

Flag Day in Argentina commemorates the creation of the flag from Argentina in 1812.

The flag was created and raised by the Argentine hero General Manuel Belgrano on February 27, 1812, in Rosario, province of Santa Fe.

This happened during the battles fought during Argentina's independence process, which had begun in 1810.

General Belgrano chose the colors white and light blue to design the flag since these colors were the ones used in the Argentine national cockade (a symbol of identification to be placed on the chest).

The flag was created in order of have a symbol that represents Argentina in its new stage of independence.

Flag Day was established as a national holiday in 1938 by decree approved by President Roberto M. Ortiz.

General Belgrano died on June 20, 1820. For this reason, this day is celebrated on June 20 of each year.

Happy Flag Day!
