Chilean Customs had an outstanding participation in the seminar “Promoting trade facilitation in the Asia Pacific” which took place in Iquique (north), organized by the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations and the Asia Pacific Chamber of Commerce of that country.
The day included two practical workshops related to export mechanisms for services and logistics partners, led by representatives of the Integrated Foreign Trade System.or (Sicex) of the Ministry of Finance and the Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (Wista). In both instances, the use of new integrated electronic platforms and the active participation of Customs in them were explained.
A forum was later held by the Advisor of the APEC Chile Office of the Undersecretariat of International Economic Relations, Lina Meneses, with the participation of the National Director of Customs, José Ignacio Palma; the manager of Customs and Trade for Latin America of UPS, Rodrigo Aznarez; the general manager for the West Coast of South America of Sealand Maersk, Jaqueline Rojas; and the general manager of Zofri, Claudio Pommiez.
Various topics were discussed at the event, highlighting e-commerce and its impact on Zofri. In this regard, the manager of Zofri SA, Claudio Pommiez, stated that they are working on it and building a proposal.
The National Director of Customs, José Ignacio Palma, He stated that although the business models, logistics services and strategic focus for future development are those of the Free Trade Zone administrator, "We would like to know in detail the e-commerce development project to harmonize it with customs regulations. Our purpose is to be a facilitator and we are not going to obstruct initiatives, we just want them to be framed within the legislation that governs us because we have a role of oversight and collection. Added to this is adequate risk management because security at the borders from the point of view of foreign trade is an important asset for the country.”
The Undersecretary of International Economic Relations, Rodrigo Yáñez, explained the role of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) and the importance of Chile being the host this year, as well as the fact that many activities are taking place in the regions. In this context, He valued the importance of Customs in trade facilitation initiatives such as the Sicex single window.
UPS Latin America Customs and Trade Manager Rodrigo Aznarez, pointed out that the Chilean customs office is open to dialogue and the development of good practices, citing as an example “that it is practically the only Customs office in Latin America with which we can provide advance information.”
Finally, the National Director of Customs, José Ignacio Palma, ratified the institutional commitment and work in different APEC forums, as well as the participation in the National Committee for Trade Facilitation for the development of standards and procedures that support trade in a context of adequate control and oversight.
