With the aim of carrying out preventive and reconnaissance actions, the Special Federal Operations Group (GEOF) of the Argentine Federal Police toured the facilities of the Laboratory of the National Service for Health and Food Quality (Senasa) located in Martinez, province of Buenos Aires, on Thursday (31.10.2019/XNUMX/XNUMX).
The agents of GEOF explained to the Laboratory staff security concepts to prevent any risk cases, such as shielding of incoming samples.They added that, in general, almost all cases of terrorist attacks in other countries were produced by an insider and not by external agents.
The GEOF is a unit dependent on the General Directorate of International Terrorism and Complex Crimes of the Argentine Federal Police, prepared to act in counterterrorism and anti-narcotics missions.It is also used for protection of personalities and hostage rescue situations.
Senasa's central laboratory is among the ten in the world in its specialty that have a biosecurity level 4 according to the parameters of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), biosecurity is a set of standards and measures to protect the environment and the health of personnel in the performance of their duties against the biological, chemical and physical risks to which they are exposed.
At biosafety level 4 there are units for dangerous pathogens. For this reason, it has a hermetically sealed entrance, an exit with a shower and special waste disposal. In addition, it has filtered air and a double-door autoclave.
The meeting was attended by the highest authorities of the Senasa Laboratory and the coordination departments that comprise it: Management and Control, Biosecurity and Bacteriology, Safety and Security and Hygiene. At the end, they warned that a potential case of extreme risk would be the contamination of the city by throwing a strain stolen from the laboratory into the water distributor.
This type of action prevents possible attacks, taking into account the magnitude of the facilities. Through this joint work between the Agency's Security and the GEOF, the health of the agents, the environment and the country's economy are protected.
