Chilean Customs and Carabineros carried out a joint operation in Monte Aymond (south), when the driver was confronted by customs control.
The officers seized 2064 high-end cell phones and various technological items such as consoles and notebooks, preliminarily valued at 200 million pesos, after a driver who was traveling in his truck with destination to Rio Gallegos, Argentina, will reach the Monte Aymond border crossing in the Province of Magallanes.
According to the customs report, the subject took the wheel and made a maneuver to return to Chile by the international route. Before that, the police from the Monte Aymond Police Station were informed, who put out the alert to search for the vehicle, which was later intercepted by the police from the Río Seco sector, who reported the incident to the Punta Arenas Prosecutor's Office, which determined the presence of Customs and the taking of a statement from the driver.
The Acting Director of Punta Arenas Customs, Osvaldo Soto, said that “it was a very unusual incident, which ended successfully thanks to the quick coordination carried out by our officers with the Carabineros, who activated a device to find the whereabouts of the vehicle that evaded our inspection. Our officers are very alert and are clear that above all things they have a role in protecting the borders, both in the entry and exit of illicit goods and contraband, and they know how to react to different situations.”
