-

On Monday, February 7, the World Customs Organization (WCO) inaugurated an accreditation workshop for operational technical advisors on intellectual property rights for the Americas and the Caribbean, the Regional Vice Presidency reported through its official Twitter account.

Representatives of seven member customs administrations, namely: Argentina, Belize, Nicaragua, Peru, United States and Dominican Republic, participated in the start of the activity, carried out in virtual format, with the aim of becoming future experts accredited by the OMA.

In his opening remarks, the  Vice President Regionl, Werner Ovalle, stated in this regard: “The WCO has promoted various tools and instruments that, combined with the capacity development process with workshops such as this one, will allow for the creation of accredited experts who will support the Secretariat as part of its new Intellectual Property strategy.”

Likewise, Ovalle reiterated the full support of the regional office for Institutional Strengthening, Intraregional Cooperation and Logistics Security. "These are important aspects of our administration," the Vice President emphasized.

The Americas and the Caribbean region was chosen with a view to improving its legal/administrative procedures as well as its organizational structures for Intellectual Property Rights.

Officials accredited in intellectual property law by the WCO are expected to provide practical advice to strengthen border measures against piracy and counterfeiting.
