China and the US conclude talks and meet in Washington

-

China and the United States have concluded a new round of negotiations held in Beijing these days to try to end the trade war between the two countries. The meeting was opaque, with no details yet revealed, and will continue next week in Washington.

"We have concluded productive meetings with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He. We will continue our discussions in Washington next week," US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who led the US delegation, posted on Twitter last night.

China's official news agency Xinhua, which regularly reports on government positions, merely confirmed that the meeting had taken place without providing further details.

US officials arrived in China on Tuesday evening (30.4.2019) and, after a working dinner with their Chinese counterparts, held a series of meetings yesterday prior to next week's meeting, when it is hoped that a definitive agreement can be reached to end the tensions between the two major world economic powers.

According to the White House this week - somewhat less opaque than Chinese government sources - the topics of the negotiations include trade issues such as intellectual property, forced technology transfers, non-tariff barriers, agriculture, services, purchases and the methodology for compliance with the agreement.

The 8th round of talks will be held in the United States from May XNUMX, where a delegation led by Chinese Vice Premier Liu He will travel.

The extradition hearing to the US of the CFO of the Chinese company Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, is scheduled for that same day in Canada.

Meng, who is out on bail, was arrested on December 1, 2018 at the request of the United States while she was stopping over in Vancouver, Canada, on her way to Mexico.

US authorities believe Huawei and Meng committed fraud to violate trade sanctions imposed by Washington against Iran.

US President Donald Trump suggested last December that he would use Meng's case in Canada as a tool in trade negotiations with China.

The two delegations will meet in the United States on May 8 for the fourth time since a meeting in Washington at the end of February, after which Trump said they were "very close to a trade agreement" with China.

On December 1, at the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart agreed to a trade truce to try to resolve the tariff war that began a year ago.
