China imported 834.000 tons of meat in September, customs data showed on Tuesday (13.10.2020), similar to that of last month, as The country continues to supply itself with proteins after a drop in its pork production.
The large volume, slightly up from last month's 832.000 tonnes, suggests there has been little impact from the suspension of exports from some overseas plants facing coronavirus outbreaks among workers.
The Imports in the first nine months of the year increased by 72% to 7,41 million tonnes, the General Administration of Customs said.
Customs only began publishing monthly data for all meats combined this year.
Production pork from China fell 19% in the first half of the year after the deadly pig disease African swine fever devastated its huge pig herd over the past two years.
In a separate statement, the customs said pork imports during the first nine months reached 3,29 million tonnes, up 132,2 percent year on year.
That means pork imports in September reached 380.000 tonnes, Reuters calculations show, up from 350.000 tonnes the previous month.
