Chilean President Sebastián Piñera and his Panamanian counterpart, Juan Carlos Varela, signed an agreement on Mutual Administrative Assistance in customs matters during their first official visit to the country on Monday (9.7.2018).

The purpose of the agreement is to provide mutual administrative assistance in order to information exchange that allows for prevention, investigation and combating customs violations, safeguarding the security of the international trade supply chain.
In this regard, the National Director of Chilean Customs, Claudio Sepúlveda, said: "With this agreement we will strengthen the Free Trade Agreement that Chile signed 10 years ago with Panama, and it stands as a fundamental point to continue expanding our international cooperation alliances, allowing us to access information to ensure the proper application of customs legislation and give it greater security to the logistics chain and international trade."
In addition, "we will be able to strengthen cooperation with the Panamanian National Customs Authority to better combat customs violations that may be committed and to ensure that the measures taken against them are more effective, preventing the entry of illegal goods into our borders," added Sepúlveda.

The agreement is in line with the recommendations of the World Customs Organization (WCO) regarding ensure a smooth exchange of information between customs, through the SAFE Framework, and the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which in its Article 12 considers customs cooperation as a central issue.
