Chilean e-commerce sales hit a record high US$6.079 billion in 2019 figure that represented a 25% increase compared to the previous year, according to estimates released this Thursday (27.02.2020) by the Santiago Chamber of Commerce (CCS).
The entity had predicted that sales would total US$7.000 billion, however the drop was attributed to two factors: the acts of violence that occurred after October 18 and the direct and indirect impact they had on consumption and the sharp depreciation of the peso, which worsened during the last months of the year.
The CCS report indicated that sales growth in October and November slowed sharply, with increases of 8% and 4%, respectively. Both months experienced a nominal contraction measured in current dollars. In the case of October, the deterioration of the last days of the month cancelled out the growth of CyberMonday, so that the month of highest sales of the year was May, in which the CyberDay event took place.
"Despite the deterioration in fourth-quarter performance, online commerce continued to gain market share in consumer preferences, which was reinforced by the serious damage suffered by physical commerce at the hands of crime, encouraging the use of channels with greater availability and security for consumption," said the CCS.
According to the quarterly consumer survey conducted by CCS and Kawesqar, Preference for the online channel rose to 25% of consumers, 5 percentage points above the first half.
