Chile and Peru strengthen integrated control for May 21 holiday

-

The integrated border control of Chacalluta (Chile) and Santa Rosa (Peru) will reinforce the provision of public services to face this long weekend due to the May 21 holiday; Chileans celebrate the Day of Naval Glories, a date that remembers and commemorates the Naval Battle of Iquique in the context of the Pacific War.

This decision was made at the meeting of the Bilateral Coordination Committee (CCB), where various agreements and operations recorded during the month of April were analyzed.

In this regard, Chilean and Peruvian authorities agreed that the flow of passengers and cargo remained constant during the month of April and Peruvian statistics even show a 4% increase in the number of foreign passengers compared to the same month last year.

Staff

For this reason, among the commitments made, it was highlighted that all border services will maintain and increase staff during this long weekend that runs from Friday, May 18 to Monday, May 21.

Cites

Likewise, officials will work on the exchange of information related to procedures involving species protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Time

Regarding the flow of attention, a pilot experience measured the traffic in the Santa Rosa complex on a monthly basis. To do this, the methodology recommended by the World Customs Organization (WCO) was used and the time was measured from when the driver of a vehicle parked and turned off the engine in that place, until when he left the premises heading to Tacna (Peru). During this period, private cars take 14 to 20 minutes, while collective taxis take between 10 and 17 minutes and buses take between 18 and 28 minutes to cross the border.

Representatives of the oversight agencies operating in the integrated complex participated in the meeting, including officials from the coordination of the Chilean complex, the National Customs Service, the Agricultural and Livestock Service and the Investigative Police for Chile, while representatives from Sunat, the National Agrarian Health Service, the National Police of Peru, Migrations and the Ministry of Culture attended for Peru. The event was attended by the Director of the Decentralized Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the city of Tacna, the Peruvian writer and diplomat Alberto Massa Murazzi.
