Chile, New Zealand and Singapore reached this Tuesday (21.01.2020) is a new trade agreement which will allow exporters and consumers from the three countries to explore opportunities around digital commerce, announced the Chilean Foreign Ministry.
Chilean Undersecretary for International Economic Relations Rodrigo Yáñez, along with New Zealand Minister of Trade and Exports David Parker and Singaporean Minister of Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing, announced the conclusion of talks on the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA).
«Digital trade will be the driving force of the global economy in the coming decades and international economic relations must rise to the challenge. This agreement seeks to provide more opportunities for our entrepreneurs, supporting the existence of a non-discriminatory, open and global Internet that acts as a catalyst for creativity and innovation.", said Rodrigo Yanez.
In this regard, the undersecretary added that there are new digital products that have become objects of international trade, such as music, software, e-books, video games that "dThey must be strengthened by a regulatory framework that promotes their international expansion, so that anyone with a good business idea and an Internet connection can reach any part of the world.".
The DEPA complements and supports the current negotiations within the World Trade Organization (WTO). on electronic commerce, and works within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the New Zealand minister added.
The New Zealand Government regards the DEPA as an “open plurilateral” agreement, meaning it is open to other WTO members who can comply with its rules.
